Our Story
The Community Foundation of Burke County was founded on a belief in local leadership and the power of neighbors working together to strengthen their community.
Founded in 1999, the Community Foundation of Burke County was created by local leaders who believed in the power of neighbors working together to strengthen their community. Rather than affiliating with a regional organization, they committed to building a foundation rooted entirely in Burke County, guided by local people, and responsive to local needs.
In 2000, the Community Foundation of Burke County was officially established with $20,000 and a long-term vision for charitable impact. That vision was realized early with the creation of the Francis and Emily Grill Fund, the Foundation’s first permanently endowed fund, which set the standard for responsible stewardship and giving in perpetuity.
As the Foundation grew, it became a trusted partner to donors and non-profits alike, supporting scholarships, non-profit endowments, and community initiatives. Through the use of unrestricted funds, the Foundation has also been able to respond quickly during times of crisis, including the Great Recession, the COVID-19 pandemic, and disaster recovery following Hurricane Helene.
Today, the Community Foundation of Burke County stewards more than $60 million in charitable assets, supporting causes across Burke County and across generations. What began as a bold idea has become a permanent community resource, created by the community, for the community, forever.
